Hello, I'm Maggie!
My culinary journey is deeply rooted in the humble beginnings of my childhood in Vietnam. Growing up in less-than-privileged circumstances, I quickly learned the art of making do with what was available – a skill that has shaped my approach to cooking.
Imagine a young me, not yet a cook but already roasting peanuts and pickling cabbage at the tender age of 7. These weren't just chores; they were the beginning of a culinary adventure that has defined my life. Growing up, meals were more than just sustenance; they were a symphony of flavors crafted by my mum and nan.
In our Vietnamese home, every dish told a story, and it was my mum and nan who orchestrated this culinary symphony. Even with simple ingredients like peanuts and water spinach, they transformed our dinners into sensory feasts – a comforting soup, greens tossed in oyster sauce, and salted roasted peanuts. It was a daily ritual, a celebration of togetherness, and a lesson in the art of creating something extraordinary from the ordinary.
Vietnamese cuisine, for me, is an homage to these moments – a way of preserving the traditions and memories of my family. It's a journey that started in the warmth of my childhood kitchen, surrounded by the aromas of simmering soups and the love that went into every pot.
When I moved to Kapunda, I faced the challenge of a lackluster Asian food scene and the logistical hurdles of sourcing imported ingredients. It was a turning point that led me to embrace local produce and recreate the authentic flavors of Vietnamese with a touch of my childhood magic.
In November 2021, Com Viet emerged as a tribute to these cherished memories, a food stall at the Maker Market in Kapunda. Here, amidst the market's welcoming atmosphere, I share not just food but the emotional resonance of my journey. Each bowl of soup is a taste of my heritage, a connection to the warmth of my mum and nan's kitchen, and an invitation for you to savor the comfort and joy that good food brings.
